How to become a paraprofessional in Washington
Washington is the only state with a dedicated Paraeducator Standards Board (PESB) and the highest average pay in the US.
Requirements
Washington recognizes the following routes to qualify as a paraprofessional under federal Title I-A requirements and state guidance.
- Associate degree
- 72 quarter credits
- General Paraeducator Certificate via PESB
For paraprofessionals choosing the exam route, Washington’s cut score on the ParaPro Assessment is 461. The state also accepts the newer ParaPathways assessment as an alternative.
Pay in Washington
Paraprofessionals in Washington earn an average of $38,800 per year, or about $20.80 per hour. Special Education paraprofessionals typically earn 20–30% above this average, and districts in higher cost-of-living areas within the state pay more than rural districts.
