Paraprofessional pay varies widely. Washington, New York, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia pay the most. West Virginia, Mississippi, and Louisiana pay the least. Special Education paraprofessionals typically earn 20–30% more than general classroom aides in the same district.

Three factors drive pay more than anything else: your state, your district’s funding source (suburban districts with strong property-tax bases pay more than rural Title I districts), and whether you hold a credential beyond a high school diploma — passing the ParaPro or ParaPathways assessment frequently unlocks a higher pay band.
